Organizing After a Crisis

1. Gather Your Supplies

Every job is easier when you have the right tools. Whether you’re sorting or packing, you’ll want to pick up the following supplies:

  • Boxes (for large items)
  • Plastic containers (for small items)
  • Packing tape
  • Trash bags
  • Permanent markers
  • Labels
  • Cleaning supplies

2. Follow a Schedule

Most cleanup operations have a deadline. Figure out how much time you have, and divide your tasks into manageable blocks. You’ll need time to sort belongings, pack items into boxes, load the moving truck, and deep-clean the property. 3. Create a System

Start by sorting your items into categories. A simple “keep, toss, donate” system works for most situations; you might also want to separate items that are meant to go to a specific person or place. Set aside a large box for each category, and make sure to mark which one is which.

If anyone is helping you move, direct them to the “keep” pile. They can get to work packing those items while you keep cleaning out the rest of the house.

4. Label As You Go

Packing without labeling seems like it goes faster, but you’ve just put the work off for later. Save yourself the trouble by labeling every box or container as you go. Permanent markers are great for cardboard boxes, and stick-on labels work for everything else.

5. Make Use of Your Space

If you’re knee-deep in an organization nightmare, you might run out of sorting room. Even if it’s temporary, consider moving some of the items off the floor and onto the walls instead.
