How to Avoid a Laundry Room Landfill

Laundry room organization is all about preventing buildup and keeping your supplies easy to find. Start over fresh and control the clutter with these simple organizational tips.

1) Sort with Multiple Hampers

Some clothes need gentle cycles, and others call for a heavy wash. Don’t start laundry day by sifting through a pile of unwashed clothes; instead, use a pre-sorting system to save yourself time and effort. Purchase multiple hampers or baskets that fit in your laundry space. Designate one for each type of clothing: whites, denim, bedding, and so on. You won’t just save time on sorting – you’ll also have less laundry buildup throughout the week.

2) Move Supplies to the Walls

If the top of your dryer is covered in detergent bottles, your laundry room needs more storage space. Counter space and floorspace are valuable commodities, so try using a wall-mounted storage system to free up your room. WallTech rails and grids are easy to install, and they can be customized with as many or as few shelves as you need. Once you get your supplies off the counters and floor, you’ll have plenty of space to fold, sort, and store clothes throughout the week.

3) Look for Unused Storage Spaces

Laundry rooms are full of storage areas – if you know where to look. WallTech rails can be mounted on any wall; try setting up baskets on the back of your door, shelves over the washing machine, and an ironing board hung in the extra nook between your dryer and the wall. Smaller spaces can be used to hang single baskets or drying pegs.

4) Use Small Baskets for Mismatched Items

That one sock that’s been floating around your laundry room needs a home. Designate a small basket for mismatched socks, gloves, and other miscellaneous items. You may want to set up an additional space for garments that need stain removal or mending. With these items out of the way, you’ll finally be able to get to the bottom of your laundry basket.

5) Create a Place for Unfolded Laundry

In a perfect world, you’d fold your laundry as soon as it comes out of the dryer. But if your busy schedule results in a basket of clean yet unfolded clothes, do yourself a favor and keep them somewhere accessible. Make sure the clean basket is stored away from the hampers; you don’t want someone tossing a dirty shirt in with your freshly-washed clothes.
